Course Outline


Course Description

This course enables students to analyze and discuss a range of leadership concepts and leadership theories through research and evaluation of UAE and World leaders.  A range of communication tools used by effective leaders will be introduced and students will put these skills into practice.


Course Learning Outcomes (CLO)

CLO 1. Identify and examine the meaning of leadership and the leadership styles of UAE and World leaders to better understand real world leadership challenges.
CLO 2. Identify and examine a range of Leadership Skills in order to apply these skills as a student leader and to evaluate the skills of UAE and World leaders.  
CLO 3. Recognise, describe and reflect upon individual strengths, weaknesses and goals through a range of self-assessment and self-awareness tools.
CLO 4. Read, clarify and reflect upon selected units of Flashes of Thought, by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, to better appreciate the leadership philosophy of the UAE.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

1. Developing research skills using library resources, the internet and global, regional and local publications. CLO1, 2, 3

2. Developing reading skills through reading current news items and assorted literature. CLO1,2,4

3. Developing writing skills through class and homework writing activities, and reflections CLO1,2,3,4

4. Increasing self-management and independent study skills through projects, preparing for class independently and conducting ‘Learning By Doing’ activities. CLO1,2,3,4

5. Improving overall English language skills through participating in individual and group exercises, class discussions, activities and Bblearn hosted activities. CLO1,2,3,4


6. Developing skills of leadership including time management, goal setting and confidence. CLO1, 2


Assessment


Coursework - Project Output: 25% 
Project 1: Discussion 10% + Presentation 15%. (Outcomes: 1)

Coursework - Project Output: 30% 
Project 2: Presentation 20% Discussion 10%. (Outcomes: 1,2,3)

Coursework - Journal: 15% 
Flashes of Thought Blog/Journal. (Outcomes: 4)

Final Assessment - Portfolio: 30% (CSA) 
Portfolio, to include: Quiz 20% Final Reflective Essay 10%. (Outcomes: 1,2,3)
